  • Title: Beyond Resilience Compassion Fatigue, Burnout, and Organizational Responsibility for Clinician Well Being

Abstract

Compassion Fatigue and Burnout pose serious threats to the emotional health, clinical effectiveness of behavioral health professionals. Many current models focus on individual resilience and coping mechanisms. Recent studies show that the work environment itself plays a large role in either causing or preventing occupational stress.

In this presentation, I will examine the limitations of individual-focused models and identify the organizational factors that contribute to compassion fatigue and burnout among behavioral health professionals. I use peer-reviewed research, such as West et al. (2016) and Panagioti et al. (2017), to critically assess the idea that individual clinician resilience is insufficient to manage occupational stress. The Job Demands-Resources Model (Bakker & Demerouti) and Maslach and Leiter's Six Areas of Worklife will be used as theoretical models to understand how workload, organizational culture, and fairness align with professional values that affect clinician well-being. Using a combination of existing research, clinical applications, and experiential audience participation, this presentation will identify both individual and organizational methods to promote psychological health and professional sustainability. Studies have shown that while mindfulness and self-compassion are important forms of protection, organizational interventions are necessary to achieve long-term reductions in burnout.

Ultimately, this presentation will challenge behavioral health organizations to shift their focus from expecting individual resilience to sharing responsibility for clinician well-being. Ensuring the psychological well-being of clinicians is more than just a matter of personal wellness, it is an organizational and ethical obligation that has direct implications for workforce retention, clinical effectiveness, and quality of patient care.
